Although the plant itself has traditionally been used as a panacea for ailments such as arthritis, gout and eczema, the actual root of the plant however, has been scientifically studied and is commonly used as a treatment of Benign Prostrate Hyperplasia (B.H.P) while also gaining clinical reputation for it’s efficacy as
an adjunct for treating Androgenic Alopecia, a/k/a Male Pattern Baldness (M.P.B).

Nettle Root and Hair Loss

Although lacking extensive studies regarding Nettle Root’s absolute effectiveness for treating M.P.B, limited trial research has revealed that the herb’s root can reduce the formation of the hormone Dihydrotestosterone (D.H.T) the hormone believed to be responsible for M.P.B induced hair-loss, by inhibiting the action of the enzyme 5-aplha-reductase from converting testosterone into D.H.T, and binding to the scalp receptor sites, thus preventing further hair follicle damage.

Dosage and Safety

There is no F.D.A regulation of Nettle Root, and as such no official dosage recommendation. Nettle Root may be used in the form of tinctures, shampoos, tablets, teas and capsules etc. The standard supplemental dosage as a capsule is normally between 250-500 mg per capsule. Such herbs have safely been used the world over, however, users should always adhere to the instructions provided with the supplements, and/or consult a qualified practitioner when necessary.
